Soon nicknamed Comet cars were first built between 1970 and 1973 for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad's services out of New Jersey. Given their success with the EL and successor New Jersey Transit, the Comet cars quickly spread to other commuter agencies. Boston's Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority MBTA received their first cars in 1978, Metro-North and Connecticut DOT (or ConnDOT) in 1983, Philadelphia's Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority SEPTA in 1987 and Montreal's AMT (Agence metropolitaine de transport) in 1989. As early cars were replaced, some have found work on other lines. In 2008, SEPTA and Utah Transit Authority's Front Runner received original EL-NJT Comet cars to bolster their fleets. Additionally, Los Angeles Metrolink leased the Front Runner cars from 2008 to 2010 due to a fleet shortage. The original Comet cars built for the EL were designed strictly for low platforms, but evolution of the car design by Pullman and later Bombardier (which purchased the designs) evolved the Comet design to support both high- and low-platform boarding, on-board washrooms, accessible seating and, after 1990, a wide center door for high-level platform boarding. The Comet Cab Coach is based on a standard coach with a train control cab in one end. The cab cars eliminate the need to turn or run-around consists at the end of their run. Long-distance, intercity variations of the basic design were also constructed for Amtrak as its Horizon Fleet. The Rapido N Scale cars feature free-rolling wheels, detailed underbodies, interior lighting and more. Comet Commuter cars are available in coach and cab car versions so you can easily customize your consists. This three-car set includes a pair of coaches and a matching cab car. Dual-powered locomotives are nothing new to New York commuter operations. Since the early 1900s, the main concern was diesel emissions inside the tunnels that led to Grand Central Terminal and Pennsylvania Station. Metro-North and Amtrak were looking to replace their aging fleet of EMD FL9s with a modern dual-mode diesel. Enter the GE P32AC-DM Genesis Series II locomotive in the late 1990s, which saw Amtrak order 18 of these units. The P32AC-DM designation may be a mouthful, but it is an acronym for: Passenger, 3,200 horsepower, Alternating Current, Dual-Mode. The P32AC-DM is the dual-mode cousin to the similar diesel-only P40 and P42DC passenger locomotives. In the 2020s, P32AC-DMs make their living on Empire Service trains out of Penn Station to Albany-Rensselear, as well as services to Toronto and Montreal. The model is a variant of the popular SC-44 Charger delivered to Amtrak and several commuter railroads beginning in 2017. Built in Siemens Mobility's Sacramento facility, the 4,400 horsepower SC-44 Chargers have become popular with many commuter lines. Amtrak later ordered the long-distance version of the diesel designated the ALC-42. VIA Rail Canada ordered a version of the diesel as well, designated the SC-42. Bachmann's SC-44 has been developed using original design documentation and employs prototype field recordings for maximum realism. Features include a TCS WOWSound CD-quality 16-bit 44,100Hz decoder with Audio Assist(R) for easy configuration without CVs, and a Keep-Alive(R) device for uninterrupted operation, even over dirty track. The WOWSound diesel-electric locomotive package includes an authentic horn, bell, prime mover, startup\/shutdown, compressor, cooling fan, coupler close\/release, brake release\/application, crew alert, grade crossing quill, station announcements, and more. This all-steel caboose was based on a proposed design by the USRA, which originally specified wood sheathing. The Reading built 285 cars, spread through several classes. The earliest cars had solid underframes while later cars were equipped with Duryea cushion underframes. This design was so successful that other roads took note such as; the Central Railroad of New Jersey, Lehigh \u0026amp; New England, Lehigh Valley, Pittsburg \u0026amp; West Virginia and the Western Maryland. Production was spread out between the Reading and the purchasing roads, which meant variations were bound to be made to the original design. Different groups of cars were equipped with different trucks, running boards, steps, grabs and end wall windows (or lack thereof). Many of these cabooses were used. By Conrail and Chessie in regular service until the end of mandatory caboose operations. Some would continue in local and work train service while many were sold second-hand to other railroads - Class Is and shortlines alike! Others are enjoying their retirements on tourists roads, museums or even as part of hotels! And, in the 2020s, a handful are still part of work train consists. Northeastern-Style Steel Cabooses are accurately scaled from prototype blueprints and feature fully detailed underframes including bolsters, piping and equipment and appropriate trucks.
