In the mid 1950s, with passengers quickly switching to airline travel or the private automobile, the Budd company devised the Slumbercoach as an economical way to attract overnight passengers back to the rails. With a capacity of 40 passengers in a 24 single room plus 8 double room plan, the Slumbercoaches offered a lower cost alternative positioned between coach seating and a first class bedroom on overnight runs. A single aisle in the center of the car was flanked by the single and double rooms on each side. With 18 cars built new between 1956 and 1959, these cars with their distinctive staggered windows could be seen on some of the USA's most famous trains such as the North Coast Limited, Denver Zephyr, National Limited, Texas Eagle and many more. Later, in 1964 the NP acquired the B&O and MP cars and at least 2 cars ended up with BN lettering briefly in 1970-71. The entire fleet would end up with Amtrak in the 70s and 80s with all cars converted to head end power. Most lasted into the 1990s when they were finally retired and replaced with more modern equipment such as the Superliner II and Viewliners. Soon nicknamed Comet cars were first built between 1970 and 1973 for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad's services out of New Jersey. Given their success with the EL and successor New Jersey Transit, the Comet cars quickly spread to other commuter agencies. Boston's Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority MBTA received their first cars in 1978, Metro-North and Connecticut DOT (or ConnDOT) in 1983, Philadelphia's Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority SEPTA in 1987 and Montreal's AMT (Agence metropolitaine de transport) in 1989. As early cars were replaced, some have found work on other lines. In 2008, SEPTA and Utah Transit Authority's Front Runner received original EL-NJT Comet cars to bolster their fleets. Additionally, Los Angeles Metrolink leased the Front Runner cars from 2008 to 2010 due to a fleet shortage. The original Comet cars built for the EL were designed strictly for low platforms, but evolution of the car design by Pullman and later Bombardier (which purchased the designs) evolved the Comet design to support both high- and low-platform boarding, on-board washrooms, accessible seating and, after 1990, a wide center door for high-level platform boarding. The Comet Cab Coach is based on a standard coach with a train control cab in one end. The cab cars eliminate the need to turn or run-around consists at the end of their run. Long-distance, intercity variations of the basic design were also constructed for Amtrak as its Horizon Fleet. The Rapido N Scale cars feature free-rolling wheels, detailed underbodies, interior lighting and more. Another reason for using retired cars was that SP's foundry couldn{t roll a long enough center sill and no one could supply one quickly enough. The new cars were pressed into service on the San Joaquin and Shasta Daylights and the Overland and later in the 1960s on the consolidated City of San Francisco and the Coast Daylight. Built with fluted side panels, the cars were modified by the SP with slab sides in the 1960s with at least four of the fleet later operating for Amtrak on a variety of routes through the 1970s.

The interiors of the cars featured a bar/lounge on the lower level and one of two different configurations of seating on the upper level. In part because of the varied origins of the donor cars, underbody configurations also changed. This 3/4 Dome-Lounge model features one of two roadnumber appropriate interiors, two underbody arrangements, and fluted or stepped flat sides.

Features include:

Designed from original blueprints, design drawings and field measurements.

Track-powered flicker-free interior lighting compatible with DC and DCC layouts.

Factory-installed grab irons and full underbody detailing

Free-rolling, highly-detailed trucks with metal wheelsets.

Accurate interior and exterior paint and decoration

Lighting (prototypically) in the dome roof

Metal magnetic knuckle couplers

Minimum 22" radius curves recommended.

Check out the entire line of Rapido HO Scale passenger cars.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0929/7228/6317/files/606-175003_01_f38e8cdd-c500-4bd3-8424-d4120afc3563.jpg?v=1774376265
bil-commuter-sounder-set1
Bilevel Commuter Cab Car & 2 Coach Set - Ready to Run -- Sounder Set #1 #302, 404, 410 (white, blue, green)
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0929/7228/6317/files/606-546022_01_54dae3ab-ae82-4d55-b7e0-c8e4d12ca27d.jpg?v=1774376439
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0929/7228/6317/files/381-1017891_01_e2b4f5cc-1521-48fe-838f-f11d2450065b.jpg?v=1774375036
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0929/7228/6317/files/606-546030A_01_c21576ea-80d3-4403-a599-1498e1c540b3.jpg?v=1774376440
18passenger-b-o-2
18" Short Dome, Coach Set - 3-Rail - Ready to Run -- Baltimore & Ohio #5507, 5550 Strata Club (blue, gray, yellow)
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0929/7228/6317/files/434-2627300_01_cf8b67a2-9efc-4aa3-b6df-b8df22536186.jpg?v=1774375255
18al-ss-diner-prr
18" Streamlined Fluted Diner - 3-Rail - Ready to Run - StationSounds -- Pennsylvania Railroad #4525 (silver, Tuscan)
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0929/7228/6317/files/434-2527110_01_fe49035f-948c-4a05-9a5a-16136b9b8cd7.jpg?v=1774375209
amflt-ii-cch-amt-ph-iii-25
85' Amfleet II 59-Seat Coach - Ready to Run -- Amtrak(R) Phase III #25036
Featuring newly tooled, ultra free rolling trucks, WalthersProto HO Scale Amfleet Coaches are ready for your railroad's passenger trains. The Olympian Hiawatha ran through scenic Idaho, Montana's Bitterroot Mountains and Washington's Cascade range. This was advertised as being a "speedliner." The railroad contracted industrial designer Brooks Stevens to design the train consist, which included some unique and signature cars of the Milwaukee Road. In 1952, the first full-length "Super Dome" cars were added, which included 68 dome seats and 28 lounge seats. The dome area featured seats positioned lengthwise, facing the 625 square foot double-pane windows - ideal for sightseeing yet insulated for harsh weather. The Olympian Hiawatha was a favorite of many travelers during the post-war travel boom and continued to operate into 1961. In 1955 change came to the train in the form of its color scheme. The Milwaukee Road reached an agreement with Union Pacific to host its trains between Omaha and Chicago. In the process, the railroad adopted its Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray "Streamliner" scheme. The new scheme was economical to apply and maintain, so Milwaukee adopted it for passenger locos and cars systemwide.
