Product Information

In 1877, John E. Wooten invented a new style of engine firebox designed to burn anthracite coal. To accommodate the designs extra width at the rear, the engine cab was moved forward to the middle of the boiler. Some folks thought this resembled a camels hump, hence the name camelbacks. Others thought it looked like the hood worn by Old Mother Hubbard in the popular nursery rhyme and referred to them as Mother Hubbards. Although associated with the eastern US, engines of this design eventually found their way on to the rosters of some 50 different lines, including UP, SP, Katy and PRR. Finely detailed and ready for service on your railroad, each comes equipped with Magic Mate couplers, which can be used with horn-hook or knuckle type couplers.
