Why doesn't Walthers include 'era specific' information in their reference books?
Walthers does include era information for our own products in reference books, printed materials, and on our website. We encourage vendors to do the same, but not all provide this information. Some products like heavyweight passenger cars and classic autos are difficult to categorize by era.

"Code" refers to the height of the rail in thousandths of an inch. In HO, you can use code 100, 83, and 70 on the same layout — code 100 is tallest, code 70 is shortest. In N scale, you can use code 80, 55, and 40. Use transition tracks or rail joiners to keep the top of the rail level between codes.

Why do manufacturers issue models in road names that never ran the prototype?
Why do manufacturers issue models in road names that never ran the prototype?
Hobbyists have a wide range of interests and varying desires for prototypical accuracy. Manufacturers produce what people want to buy. Simple economics also plays a role — tooling is expensive, so more road names mean more sales and better use of tooling, keeping prices affordable.

Model Technical
What color or paint was used on a particular Walthers locomotive, passenger car, or rolling stock item?
What color or paint was used on a particular Walthers locomotive, passenger car, or rolling stock item?
Modelers must match paint through trial and error or by eye using available model railroad paints. The technical or historical society of the railroad in question may be more helpful — they have online modeling forums that suggest particular paints and colors. We cannot specify a color from a particular manufacturer, as production paint is not suitable for bottling in small quantities.

There are numerous methods for painting and weathering models. Our modelers use the technique they feel most comfortable with. Walthers carries Kalmbach Publishing books that cover various painting and weathering techniques.
